Teton / Yellowstone Adult Pre-Trek, September 13-19, 2013
The purpose of this trip was to determine the viability of a scout trip to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park in the summer of 2015.
On Friday morning, the group departed from Watkinsville around 4:30am. Each person packed one large duffel bag containing a backpack, additional clothing and gear. Each person carried on one smaller bag with personal items and clothing. We arrived without incident to the Atlanta airport for our 7:30am flight to Denver, connecting to Idaho Falls, Idaho. The flight was delayed over one hour in Atlanta (due to a pilot that "over-slept" or "was stuck in traffic") and our connecting flight was delayed approximately two hours due to weather and "crew issues." With a two hour trip from Idaho Falls to the GTNP office, this delay placed us in a difficult position of picking up our hiking permits, previously arranged by Tom via GTNP, by 5:00pm. While Dave valiantly tried to get us to the park office in time, via our rental SUV, we arrived at 5:11pm and the park office was closed.
We had dinner at Bubba's BBQ (Geof's choice and a bad one at that) where we discussed several hiking options. We decided to flip our schedule, visiting YNP Saturday and Sunday, giving us a couple of days to acclimate to higher altitudes, and hike GTNP Monday to Wednesday, if this was acceptable to the backcountry permit office. We found lodging at the Antler Motel in Jackson and found Teton Mountaineering, a hiking/climbing gear store where we obtained JetBoil fuel and bear spray.
